Suicide is Painless
It’s the woman accelerating
0-80 down the freeway;
she wiped her eyes as
the incoming headlights
of the delivery truck
hit her straight through.
It is one of these moments
that we hover preciously
naked and divine, curled
up, eyes open. It’s here
when two hands of
two brothers come up:
the first is Dream, with
just one bash on the head,
lie forever with him;
the other was Poetry
in his battered hand, see
divorce, death, and despair
destruction, depression,
demolition, delirium:
In this one moment
lies the crucial choice
of which brother we would
sleep with: Hurry!
Poetry’s hand is closing.

This is the 100 Songs Project, a 100-day writing challenge based on AFI’s 100 Years…100 Songs. Every day, I write a short poem, prose piece, or play based on, reacting to, rejecting, accepting, or doing something related to one of the songs in the top 100 list.
