My Heart Will Go On
6am:
Eyes snapping open hours before alarm rings
Burnt toast
Flavoured cereal
Old juice
Newspapers printed in gibberish
9am
Foggy computer screen
Bland coffee
Paper clips tangled
Disarranged documents
A tap on the shoulder
12pm
TV Dinner
Rusty microwaves
Laughless conversations
Call me promises that are never kept
Hockey game that is never watched
3pm
Slouched
Pencils snapped
Snippy retorts
Boss’s unsure look
Untied shoelaces remaining that way
Erasers gnawed multiple times
6pm
Home fucking home
Yesterday’s news repeated
Mixed beer and energy drinks
Peanuts
A cushion with a wearing out butt print
Boxers and wifebeaters
12 unread messages
9pm
Pillows still smells of shampoo
Clock ticking
Angry sex next door
Tissue paper
Untouched shoes
Wiping photographs
Unmeant prayers
12am
Delusions
Projected ghosts
Insomnia-induced fever
Fever-induced insomnia
Hands holding
Forever waiting for the sunrise

This is the 100 Songs Project, a 100-day writing challenge based on AFI’s 100 Years…100 Songs. Every day, I write a short poem, prose piece, or play based on, reacting to, rejecting, accepting, or doing something related to one of the songs in the top 100 list.
